දෛනික ඉංග්‍රීසි | Daily English | The Story Of The Last Man - P13

The Story Of The Last Man*
A thriller, where what you see is not what you get!

*This is from a movie script that was never produced due incomplete work. Maybe now we can complete it and use to learn English in the same time.
Part 13

They finished the meeting successfully and rest of the day was busy too as usual.

John used to go to one particular restaurant for dinner during weekdays and it was like a habit. The place was bit dark and very peaceful, may be that is why he liked it. It was a quite relief from his busy work hours.
He finished his dinner and thought to take a little walk. He liked to take long walks in the dark after work, it kind of helped him to relax and burn some calories.

While he was walking, he started to the think about the mysterious old man, Morgan again, and in a while he saw Morgan sitting by the side of the sidewalk, the same way as he saw him last morning in his dream. John said “hey” and started to walk towards him. Morgan didn’t open his eyes till John came to him.

John started talking as soon as he came closer. “Hey, are you Morgan Patrick?”

“”Yes, John, you can call me Morgan.”

“Jesus, I know you man. I,.. we met last night in a dream, I mean technically today morning,... but how can it be possible?
I went to the cafe today morning as well but they don’t know you. You came to me in my dream but,.. but there is no way that you know about it. It’s impossible because it was only a dream.” John paused for few seconds and he looked really confused.

Then he asked “Well, you don’t know about that dream or our meeting in that dream, right?”

Part 12

“Of cause, we just got to know each other.” Dan said.

“Excellent.” He looked at everyone and then turned back to Dan.

“Dan Smith is the founder of XL Systems. He is the brain behind everything. You all had some questions about Workforce Management and he is the best guy to answer your questions, because he designed this system originally to manage his own staff.”

John jumped directly to the topic as time was very limited and paused for questions.

“Yes John, and Dan, it is our pleasure to meet you indeed and we appreciate your time. Please allow me to ask the first question,..” One gentleman asked permission for the first question while everyone seemed very interested.

“We started using WFM last month and my team is still struggling with it. It seems that staff doesn't understand it or doesn’t want to understand it.”

Dan smiled and asked back “Do you all have the same problem?”

“Yes, more or less”. Everyone agreed.

John was a natural salesperson and he didn’t like the vibe here. He said “Dan, they all had the same problem and that is why I categorized and got them all in one meeting so that you all can save time.” He actually said it to the clients but not to Dan.

Part 11

John’s company worked with small and medium businesses where they provided productivity solutions to them. One solution was for the sales staff which was known as Technical Sales Team or TST and the other was for operational staff known as Workforce Management or WFM. Both tools increased productivity of staff considerably but no one believed in them till the system was fully tested.

At that time, people were not yet ready to believe in productivity softwares. They believed that softwares were just for data management and that was it. If they wanted to increase productivity, they wanted to hire productivity consultants but not buy softwares.

After his sales meetings, he went to the next meeting room where six others were already waiting for him. But he John was not late, they were just early.

“Good morning ladies and gentlemen” John greeted and welcomed the visitors. Then he turned to his right side and said “Dan, these ladies and gentlemen are our client who you already know by the name. Have you introduced yourselves?” He asked from everyone with a smile.

The Story Of The Last Man*
A thriller, where what you see is not what you get!

*This is from a movie script that was never produced due incomplete work. Maybe now we can complete it and use to learn English in the same time.
Part 10

Staff was listening as they always did when John talked. John was a nice guy but he wanted everything in order and most of all the staff knew that everything John talked in the mornings were targeted nothing but closing sales.

“Then what is XL Systems? It is a tool that improves the sales of your business clients. It’s like a gun that you use to kill and you do not care what it is made of as long as it gets the job done.
XL Systems is not a software but a tool that increases your sales. That is what we promise our clients and that is what we deliver to them.

Our promise is that we will improve your sales by 50% if you follow our instructions properly. And that is the promise that we make.

Now, do not confuse your clients by saying that you are there to sell a software. They will just show you the door as there are thousands of softwares to buy.
And when you make that kind of a lousy first impression, you are as good as a losing the sale before even pitching your client.

Instead make a good first impression and get the attention of your client by saying that ‘I am a Sales Consultant and I can Improve your Sales by at least 30%.’

50% may sound too good to be true at the first pitch and that is why we say ‘at least 30%’.

Now that’s all for today and remember we are sales consultants but not software salesmen.”

John ended his speech for the day and turned to other discussions.

The Story Of The Last Man*
A thriller, where what you see is not what you get!

*This is from a movie script that was never produced due incomplete work. Maybe now we can complete it and use to learn English in the same time.
Part 9

Narrator:
John needed all his team players to be seated at the sales floor by 9AM every morning. He didn’t care of client meeting or any other bullshit. He just needed them there on time.

Sales floor was a big conference room which was the office of the entire sales team and no one had cubicles. Not even John who was the manager and the leader. The concept of no cubicle for sales staff was brought XL System by John himself with his promotion as the team manager. Originally, everyone hated it while the directors loved it. It was very cost effective for the company and very productive as everyone is always under watch.

Why previous managers never thought of it? Maybe they were not smart enough to work out this highly productive work culture or maybe they just wanted to waste their time in big offices and brag about it.
But John, he never bragged anything but he was the youngest team manager and the most productive man in the history of XL Systems.

As he came to the room, everyone said “Good morning John”. John went to his seat and looked at them.

“Morning,... Every client believes in what they were told to believe. If you tell your clients that XL Systems is a software, they will believe it. That’s why you should never say so.”

Part 8

“Nope, never heard of him” June replied after thinking a bit but she was confident. “Why you are looking for him?” She asked with a smile.

“No, no, nothing special, just an old friend” John smiled and turned back to go. June looked suspicious but moved on with her work.

As John walked back he kept thinking about the old man. “Why am I being obsessed about this man. It was just a dream” he thought. But he clearly knew that it felt so real to be a dream.

He went into his office and suddenly everything else was switched off but the work.
He was gifted with this great ability to forget about everything else while he was at work. It was a blessing as nothing bothers him but the target at work so that he can perform well.

John was a sales team manager and one of the best. He commanded 10 very talented software salesmen, who are not ordinary people under his command.

June is a beautiful young lady who just turned to 30 and she always serves her customer with a lovely smile. She was a good friend of John and they had known each other for over 3 years by now.

“Good morning John” June greeted with a smile as usual. “Hey, June, Morning” John greeted back while looking around.
Then June said “You don’t usually come for coffee before going to the office, what’s up to day?”

“Nothing,.. Hmm” He looked at June and said “Just wanted to see your lovely smile.”. They both laughed while June handed over his usual.

John turned around after paying with a rigid wave and a smile, but then in seconds he turned back again to June and asked “Hey, June, have you ever seen an old man called Morgan Patrick? Maybe a customer?” in a serious manner.

Learn Spoken English?

"Learn Spoken English"? It doesn't sound right, does it? Let's say, "Practice Spoken English".

If you are not native English Speaker, I am sure you have visited few spoken English classes or at least tried few other methods to improve your spoken English. But have you actually improved it? I don't think so.

Where have we made mistakes as far as learning spoken English is concerned?

Let's be simple first. How did we learn our mother tongue in the first place? Had we started grammar lessons from age 2?
I am sure you did't take such lessons. But you had surely followed your parents like parrots. You had surely repeated words and sentences first without even knowing the meaning of them. However, this stupid looking act of us made us NATIVE speakers of that language.
I am sure the grammar knowledge of your mother tongue is still not good, but you are a very fluent speaker of that language.

So, my simple question is, why don't we use the same technique to learn spoken English? We all know that it works for sure as we have already learned a least one language with that method, but why not try it for English?

That's what LearnEnglish18 is all about. We use that simple method, but in a very structured manner to help you improve your spoken English within 6 months.

Even though, this method was used by all of us to learn our mother tongue, it's generally not used to teach spoken English in traditional class based environment. They still try grammar lessons first and expect students to use them in speech.
However, during recent years, it's becoming increasingly popular even among traditional teachers due to one simple fact. That it WORKS!

So what is this method?
Very simple, you listen and repeat, you repeat at least 30 times with the audio or video clip in the given lesson.
Sometimes it could be somewhat boring and that is why we have used some of your favorite movies in Semester 2.
With these movies, you will listen and practice with 100% real life English and it indeed real life English that you need!

This is an example from Semester 2. This lesson is compiled from the movie "The Matrix (1999)".

Login to Semester 1 today and become a fluent English Speaker in 6 months!

Part 6

He looked at the clock and realized it was only a dream. Now he had to get ready to go to the office.

John was again wondering about the dream when he was driving to the office.
“Was he real? Have I ever seen someone like that? Or was he just an imagination?” John tried to recall but cannot remember anyone like Morgan in the real world.

He parked his car and went towards the entrance of the office. But didn’t walk in, instead he turned back and went to the cafe next to the office, which was mentioned by Morgan in his dream. He knew that it was only a dream, but it was too real for him to easily forget it. He actually felt that it was not just another dream and that is why he wanted to step to the cafe before going to the office in the first place.

He went to the cafe and bought a coffee. He looked around but everything is as usual including his favorite girl in the cafe, June.

Then Mogan said  “Maybe you were too busy to notice the world around you, maybe you just enjoy dreaming and running in your dreams. Oblivious, maybe?”

John thought it was a joke and looked at the old man with a smile but he was not smiling.

“Tell me John, how do you know if something is real or not? How do you know that this very incident is not just another dream?” Morgan asked again.

“Well, I’ve got to pinch myself and see I guess” John laughed.

Then Morgan said “Time to wake up John, maybe next time.”

John looked confused again.

In few seconds, an alarm went off and John woke up from his bed. He sat on the bed for a minute and the dream flashed back. It felt so real to him and he still felt like Morgan was speaking to him.

The old man wasn’t moving an inch when he was talking, he never looked here and there but right at the face of John as he spoke. He didn’t move his hands or legs either. He didn’t smile but I can't say he didn’t smile either; he just looked happy and satisfied all the time.

“I was,...I was,...” John paused and looked surprised again. He stammered in a low voice “I,.. I don't know. I can't remember,...” In few seconds, he yelled “Who are you? How do you know all this?”

Old man said “My name is Morgan Patrick. I have seen you many times in the cafe next to your office where you visited almost every day.”

“Oh.” John looked confused again. “But I can’t remember you” John said.

Old man opened his eyes and asked back with a slight smile “Are you sure you are awake John?”

John was very confused and after a pause he responded “what the,...wha,..” he ran out of words again. Then he asked “How do you know my name?”.

Old man said “I’m aware of many people who don’t know me. You happened to be one of them”.
“But how?” John asked.
John is not a man who takes “no” for an answer, so he wanted to know. Surprisingly, old man knew it too.
He said “I know you will not give up easily without a clear answer, but first, do you know why you were running?”

A thriller, where what you see is not what you get!

*This is from a movie script that was never produced due incomplete work. Maybe now we can complete it and use to learn English in the same time.
Part 1

Narrator:
It was an early Thursday evening, a man was running in a dark alley as if he is scared and running away from something. He was wearing casually, holding few books in his right hand and he kept looking back as he was running. He has the looks of a well educated man and resembles the movie star Leonardo DiCaprio, but not very clean shaven.

His name was John Williams and he was 39 years old.

John kept running in the alley, where some old buildings and trees were passing by and then he entered a semi urban area. As he entered, he saw an old black man sitting by the side of the road with his legs crossed, back upright and his eyes appeared to be closed. He was sitting on a step that was about one feet high from the ground level and it could be a concrete step that was built to place a flower trough. That old man could be in his early seventies with a short beard and wearing an old jacket. He appeared to be homeless but he was pretty much cleaner, attractive and looked too happy to be a homeless man. He resembled the famous movie star Morgan Freeman.
